Wix or Shopify? Choosing the right platform for your webshop
Both can run a great online store. The right choice depends on what the shop is for and how you expect it to grow.
“Should I use Wix or Shopify?” is one of the first questions I hear when someone wants to start selling online. Both are mature, reliable platforms, and both can run a good-looking, profitable shop. The better choice depends less on the platform and more on your business.
Start with what the shop is for
Is the shop the business, or part of the business?
- If selling products online is the business, and you expect the catalogue and order volume to grow, Shopify is usually the stronger starting point. It’s built commerce-first, with a checkout, order management and an app ecosystem designed around selling.
- If the shop sits alongside other things, like a portfolio, a blog, bookings or event pages, Wix is often the easier fit. It’s a website builder first, with e-commerce built in, and gives you a lot of design freedom for the rest of the site.
Five questions that usually settle it
- How big will the catalogue get? A handful of products works well on either. Hundreds of products with variants tend to feel more at home on Shopify.
- Where else will you sell? If marketplaces, social channels or physical retail are on the roadmap, check how each platform handles multichannel selling for your case.
- How much design control do you want? Wix makes it easy to shape every page visually. Shopify relies more on themes, which are excellent but more structured.
- Which payment providers do you need? Look at the providers available in your country, and at each platform’s transaction fees for the ones you plan to use.
- What happens behind the shop? If orders need to flow into Odoo, Salesforce or your accounting, check the available integrations before you commit.
Don’t forget the back office
The platform decision is only half the story. A webshop that isn’t connected to your stock, invoicing and customer data creates manual work the moment orders start coming in. Plan how orders, customers and inventory will move between systems from the start, even if you only connect them later.
